I have time

The Passage of Time

If you have time to offer that’s a beautiful thing!

Here are a few ideas on how donating your time can help.

Mentor – There are numerous programs looking for adults to mentor foster youth.  When you do this you have the opportunity to build lasting and meaningful relationships with young men and women who are looking for a little guidance and/or friendship.  For some of the kids I have known a mentor has been the most important and significant personal relationship in their lives.  Mentoring gives kids a model of a healthy relationship, a real person to person connection, a sounding board and more.  Check your local area for mentoring programs seeking volunteers and find one that fits who you are and what you have to offer.  Some localities have organizations that keep track of various Mentor programs in the area and may be able to help you find a good fit.  Oregon Mentors is an example.  Trust me; if you give our kids the opportunity they will expand your heart and horizons, they certainly have done that for me.

Volunteer – Many programs accept volnteers for everything from tutoring to stuffing envelopes.  Often these volunteers are what keep organizations running so find one you believe in and go for it.

Network – It’s amazing what a difference expanding the foster care community can make.  If you have time and know people you can help change the experience kids have by talking about the importance of foster care.  When we come together to make change for something we believe in we are powerful.  Talk, share, inspire, and connect.

Please share any other ideas you have.
